Women and Girls in Science Day: Promoting scientific vocations

In 2026, the Institute is advancing its commitment to equality in research by launching three key actions.

Every 11 February, International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated, a key date for highlighting the fundamental role of women in research and for continuing to work towards a more equal, diverse and inclusive science.

At Biosistemak, we are once again joining in this celebration, reaffirming our commitment to gender equality through concrete actions that focus both on inspiring new generations and on the internal transformation of our organisation.

Three scientific voices to inspire vocations

To mark 11F, this year we are launching the campaign “3 scientific voices to inspire vocations“, a mini-series of three videos featuring researchers from the Institute who share a direct and personal message aimed at girls and young women interested in science.

Under the slogan “Science is for you too / Zientzia zuretzat ere bada”, the campaign seeks to offer real and diverse role models, showing that scientific careers are possible and necessary.

The protagonists of this mini-series are Itxaso Alayo, mathematician, data scientist and researcher (9 February); Sarah Berrocoso, Doctor of Psychology, researcher and European project manager (11 February); and Ania Gorostiza, mathematician, data scientist and biostatistician (13 February).

New initiatives in 2026: female leadership and empowerment

Throughout 2026, Biosistemak will continue its work on equality by organising sessions on female empowerment and leadership, as well as feminist breakfasts, designed as spaces for reflection, dialogue and collective learning.

The female empowerment and leadership sessions will be aimed at strengthening the personal and professional skills of women in the organisation, promoting confidence, the visibility of female talent and leadership from an inclusive perspective. For their part, the feminist breakfasts are intended to be informal and participatory spaces for the exchange of experiences, joint reflection and analysis of challenges related to equality in the field of research and the workplace.

Language as a tool for equality

Finally, the Institute’s commitment to equality in science is also reflected in the way we communicate. In December 2025, we published an Inclusive Language Manual, a practical tool that establishes the principles that guide communication and professional relationships within the organisation.

It is a visual infographic, which includes simple guidelines aimed at integrating more open language into scientific and institutional communication and everyday life, promoting a culture based on respect, equity and diversity.

This document is available on our website and forms part of the actions included in the Biosistemak Equality Plan 2022–2026, consolidating language as a key element in building more equal relationships in the field of research.

With this set of actions—which combine inspiration, communication and training—Biosistemak promotes a more conscious and inclusive organisational culture that is aligned with the values of public research and scientific excellence.
