Three basic areas will be covered in this programme: eating, physical activity and emotional health.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bio-sistemak.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/pre-start-intervencion-individual-sesiones-educativas.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5853 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bio-sistemak.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/pre-start-intervencion-individual-sesiones-educativas.jpg\" alt=\"pre-start-intervencion-individual-sesiones-educativas\" width=\"489\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bio-sistemak.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/pre-start-intervencion-individual-sesiones-educativas-300x262.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bio-sistemak.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/pre-start-intervencion-individual-sesiones-educativas.jpg 489w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a>This programme has been developed as part of the European project called <strong>Pre-Start<\/strong>, <em>Prevention Strategies for Adolescents at Risk of Diabetes<\/em>, in which <strong>Kronikgune<\/strong> and<strong> Osakidetza<\/strong> are taking part as partners. A <strong>programme to promote healthy lifestyles<\/strong> has been designed, aimed at <strong>preventing the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in adolescents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Pre-Start<\/strong> intervention has been implemented in three of <strong>Osakidetza<\/strong>&#8216;s organisations: <strong>OSI Tolosaldea<\/strong>, <strong>OSI Bidasoa <\/strong>and <strong>OSI Donostialdea.<\/strong> The first two organisations are the <strong>control groups,<\/strong> which means that the 50 adolescents who are taking part in the study will be monitored following the usual procedures of the <strong>Basque Health System.<\/strong> <strong>OSI Donostialdea,<\/strong> however, has been selected as an <strong>intervention group<\/strong> and is going to monitor patients. At <strong>health centres<\/strong> belonging to <strong>OSI Donostialdea<\/strong>, <strong>paediatricians<\/strong> taking part in the study have selected <strong>50 adolescents<\/strong> who have <strong>risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes, <\/strong>are <strong>overweight<\/strong> and lead a <strong>sedentary lifestyle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is made up of <strong>eight educational sessions<\/strong> by expert <strong>nutritionists<\/strong>, over eight consecutive weeks. All the sessions will cover <strong>three basic areas<\/strong>. First, <strong>eating,<\/strong> by explaining all about the food groups, types of nutrients, energy balance and healthy eating; second, the importance of doing daily <strong>physical exercise<\/strong> with different games and activities in each session; and finally, <strong>reinforce<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>emotionally,<\/strong> by developing activities to gain more self-confidence and managing to unite the group and boost the patients&#8217; confidence in it.<\/p>\n<p>During the programme the adolescents will also work on and learn the principles of <strong>healthy eating<\/strong>, how to <strong>increase the amount of physical exercise they do<\/strong>, how to <strong>be less sedentary<\/strong>, how to practise <strong>self-control<\/strong>, how to <strong>improve their body image<\/strong>, how to<strong> communicate<\/strong>, and how to <strong>solve conflicts<\/strong> and be <strong>assertive<\/strong>, amongst other things. <strong>Cognitive behavioural<\/strong> and <strong>psychodynamic therapy will be used to deal with these topics. <\/strong>The same topics will be covered in the sessions with the adolescents&#8217; <strong>families<\/strong>. The programme aims to <strong>make parents more aware of the problems that their children can have if they are overweight<\/strong>, and of the importance of lifestyle changes at home.<\/p>\n<p>When the programme is finished there will be <strong>sessions to go over<\/strong> what they have learnt, to help them remember it.<\/p>\n<p>This study and the programme will help to assess whether the <strong>intervention that has been designed actually encourages a change of lifestyle<\/strong> in adolescents who have risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes and at their homes.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to learn more about this project, click <a title=\"Pre-Start European Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bio-sistemak.eus\/research-projects\/european-projects-and-initiatives\/pre-start\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>50 adolescents and their families have been included in a programme to promote health and a change of life habits.
